Pest Control Tips for Restaurants

Keeping your restaurant in compliance with local health and safety codes is critical to keeping your business open and your customers satisfied. The sanitation of your establishment - whether it's the sanitary condition of the kitchen, the bathrooms, the dining room or the back office - must be exemplary for your restaurant to have a shot at attracting customers who will enjoy not only your food but the environment in which you serve it.

Pest control issues are some of the quickest ways to fail health and safety inspections. Unfortunately, these are issues that can quickly spiral from a small problem to extremely out of control. Below, read more about the common issues and learn tips to reduce your pest dilemmas.

Fly problems are an indicator of poor sanitation practices. Most species restaurants come in contact with carry more than 100 different kinds of disease-causing pathogens that are associated with filth, including typhoid fever, cholera, diarrhea, dysentery tuberculosis and more. Flies have sponging mouthparts that allow them to extract nutrients from decaying organic matter, and thus regurgitate excess waste on items they land on to restart the feeding process.

Minimize the development of fly infestations by doing the following:
- Install exclusion screen doors and windows.
- Inspect trash containers, sinks and floor drains for the accumulation of decaying organic matter.
- Install insect fly lights and air curtains, and store trash containers away from doors.
- Use bio products to clean floors and other surfaces that allow insects to feed on the organic matter that serves as breeding material.
- Rotate stock often and properly to allow for cleaning, inspection and treatment.

Similar problems will also occur when cockroaches and rodents are present. Most likely, rats, mice and insects won’t enter your restaurant straight through the front door. Rather, they’ll find or create small holes to act as entryways throughout your building, such as in the roofline or around the perimeter of your floorboards. They’ll take advantage of chimney openings, gutters and drains, old windowsills, and gaps in your building’s framework to enter your building, leaving behind signs of their forced entry noticeable to health inspectors.

Once inside, pests can wreak havoc on your food supplies, storage areas and waste collections as they seek food and materials for their habitats. Left unchecked, the damage they can cause to these areas can become extremely costly, and as the quick breeding habits of many rodents and insects take place, there will be more pests indoors destroying your property and valuable inventory.

Even if they have not destroyed your food supplies (yet), that does not mean you shouldn’t keep an eye out for pest presence. Dropped feces and shed fur from rodents, as well as the droppings of insects such as cockroaches and termites, will not only alert customers to a potential unsanitary environment, but can pose serious health risks to those around them. Droppings can carry bacteria capable of causing serious viruses and reactions.

In partnership with a watchful eye on sanitary conditions, the most effective tool for any restaurateur is a well-trained pest management professional that will design a program customized for the client. These programs could be weekly, twice each month or monthly to address any existing pest issues and to prevent new ones.
